April Animal Welfare Awareness: Vaccinating your p April Animal Welfare Awareness: Vaccinating your pets

Vaccinations are one of the most important preventative measures you can take for the health of your dog or cat. Vaccinations help protect your pet from viral and bacterial diseases such as Canine Parvovirus, Canine Distemper, feline herpesvirus, Feline Panleukopenia virus and Rabies. At some time in its life, your pet may be exposed to a serious or even fatal infectious disease. Without proper vaccination, your pet is left unprotected.

Prevention helps assure the best quality of life for your pet and is less costly than treating for a serious illness that could have been prevented.

When your dog or cat receives a vaccine, its immune system produces special substances called antibodies. The antibodies work against viruses or bacteria that cause disease and can be regarded as the bodies “fighter pilots”. Later, if your pet is exposed to that same disease, these antibodies will help destroy those viruses or bacteria. It is important to note that vaccines are preventative rather than curative. Vaccinating a sick animal is not going to help and in fact is not advised. A healthy pet and healthy immune system is required in order to build these protective antibodies in response to a vaccine.

Since the protection provided by a vaccine may gradually decline after an animal is vaccinated, periodic revaccination may be necessary. Such annual booster vaccines are necessary to “remind” the immune system to produce enough protective antibodies or fighter pilots.

Pups and kittens are particularly vulnerable to diseases because their immature immune systems can’t fight off diseases as well as older dogs and cats. This is why puppies and kittens need vaccinations several times during their first few months of life.

Please make sure that your adult dogs and cats are vaccinated on an annual basis.

With Easter upon us, the Sandton SPCA urge parents With Easter upon us, the Sandton SPCA urge parents NOT to buy live Easter animals like rabbits and baby chicks as gifts.

Rabbits and chickens can make wonderful companions, but these adorable babies grow up quickly into adults that will need proper socialization, care and companionship for many years. Since these animals are usually sold at a very young age (baby chicks at 1-3 days after they hatch and rabbits around 4-6 weeks old), the care necessary for them is high. At these ages, many animals are meant to still be with their mothers, so the need for immediate warmth and proper housing is a priority. The warmth issue is especially important for baby chicks who require an air temperature of 35 degrees the first week of their lives, requiring a source of heat like an infrared heat lamp. Like all pets, rabbits and chickens are a lifetime commitment and many people fail to realize that chickens can live up to around 5-10 years while rabbits live around 8-12 years.

We wish all our supporters a compassionate and peaceful long weekend.

Thank you for caring !
