Our Inspectorate

The core of our society

Our Inspectorate Department deals with all cruelty reports as well as pre- and post- home inspections, pet shop checks as well as general pro-active work.  The Inspectorate ensures that every animal has the right to the following freedoms:

  1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
  2. Freedom from Discomfort
  3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease
  4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour
  5. Freedom from Fear and Distress

What is the role of our Inspectors?

Our Inspectorate department forms the core of our society. At the Sandton SPCA we have three qualified inspectors who deal with all cruelty reports as well as pre- and post-adoption home inspections, pet shop checks as well as general pro-active work.

In cruelty cases it is up to these inspectors to gather all necessary evidence to prosecute cases of cruelty. We have a very large municipal area, where at present our borders extend from Lonehill in the north, to Linbro Park in the east, Parkhurst in the west and Jules Street in the south, which includes the disadvantaged areas of Malvern, Bertrams, Bez Valley, Alexandra, CBD, Hillbrow, Berea and Braamfontein.

Our inspectors are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. However as we have such a large area to cover we rely on the public to be our eyes and ears in their communities and to report cases of cruelty and neglect in their neighbourhood. All complaints are investigated, even if the call has come in anonymously.
