LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION ! ITS COMPETITION TIME 😀 The Sandton SPCA are looking for their 2021 calendar cover star. This calendar will feature black rescue dogs. If you are a black dog and a rescue, you qualify. We'll be holding auditions at Sandton SPCA on Sunday 19th July where your dog will be photographed by Emma O'Brien. There's a R250 entry fee which will be donated to Sandton SPCA & you'll receive one jumbo print from the shoot. Once all our cover contenders have been photographed we'll add them to a Facebook album and the dog with the most likes will be our cover star! Here's how to enter your dog into the cover competition - - Send a photo of your black rescue dog along with their adoption story to emma@emmaobrien.com

The Sandton SPCA serves the community in a variety of ways.
Our “open door policy” means we accept all animals no matter what condition they are in whether abused, neglected or stray.

We operate a part time clinic and have an educated staff of 23 people, whose job it is to make sure the animals at our SPCA are cared for with love and compassion.

The Sandton SPCA employs four full time inspectors whose job it is to investigate cruelty, as well as uphold the sanctity of the Five Freedoms of the SPCA, being:

1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst – by providing ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.
2. Freedom from Discomfort – by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting place.
3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease – by prevention, by rapid diagnosis and treatment.
4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
5. Freedom from Fear and Distress – by ensuring conditions and treatment that avoid mental suffering.

Our massive monthly challenge is to raise sufficient funds to keep serving and protecting the animals in our care - both in our communities and in our kennels.

To give you an idea of the enormity of the costs involved, it costs the Sandton SPCA R30 per animal in our kennels per day JUST for their food. We have:

- 67 Dog kennels
- 32 Catteries
- 28 Puppy runs
- 24 Kitten runs

At any given time, we have approximately 150 animals to care for, sometimes needing to double up in the kennels and catteries when the need arises. As a whole, it costs R500 000 per month to keep our SPCA running. This figure includes the following expenses:

- Veterinary Care (consultations, sterilisations)
- Medical Equipment and Medicines
- Food
- Water and Electricity
- Maintenance
- Transport
- Salaries

THE SANDTON SPCA DOES OUR PART
TO FLATTEN THE CURVE

With the ever increasing Covid-19 infection rate, the Sandton SPCA has put some stringent measures in place to ensure that we become part of the solution without compromising on animal care. With immediate effect, we will be limiting our services to the provision of essential services only.

Elective veterinary procedures will be put on hold for now as will any treatment for non-life threatening conditions. All our adoptions are suspended until the lifting of the government lock-down.

We will also not be attending to complaints in respect of contraventions of the City By Laws (e.g. barking complaints) and will only collect confined stray animals. Reports of cruelty will still receive our urgent attention.

We assure you that we remain dedicated to our core mandate - the prevention of cruelty to animals but current circumstances dictate that we must do so in a responsible way. We ask for the public’s understanding and support during this difficult time while we do our part to flatten the curve and prevent the spread of this virus. Together we can do this.
